Three Reasons to Choose Porcelain

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, there are two types of restorations which can help to really improve the appearance of your teeth — crowns and veneers. Crowns are caps which are placed over the tooth that requires treatment while veneers are thin shells which are placed on the surface of the teeth in order to conceal dental imperfections. Crowns and veneers can be made with either composite resin material or porcelain. While composite resin restorations may be cheaper and can be done faster, there are three reasons for why porcelain is still the gold standard of cosmetic dentistry in Sacramento.

Porcelain is more natural looking.

In order for you to find out that your cosmetic restoration is definitely effective, your restorations should be as indistinguishable from the natural teeth as much as possible. Porcelain has the same translucency as the natural dental enamel. The translucency is the reason behind why your teeth seems to sparkle whenever you smile; light is allowed inside the dental enamel layer and then bounces against the opaque dentin layer. The problem with composite resin material as well as other dental materials with solid colors is that they block the light out from the teeth, making them very conspicuous against the untreated teeth. But because porcelain allows light in because of its translucency, it can be difficult to tell the treated teeth apart from the untreated teeth.

Porcelain is more durable.

Compared to composite resin material, porcelains is more durable and can last for up to an entire decade with proper maintenance and good dental hygiene in the part of the wearer. So while porcelain crowns and veneers might cost more compared to direct crowns and veneers made with composite resin material, porcelain is still a great investment because you do not have to worry about your restorations needing to be re-done anytime in the future.

Porcelain is stain resistant.

If a restoration gets stained, then you would need to have it replaced in order to improve the aesthetics of your smile. Therefore, if you want to avoid having to shell out more in the long run by constantly replacing your dental restorations, then you need to pick out a dental restoration which is resistant to stains. Composite resin material is not stain resistant but porcelain has a glass-like surface which allows it to resist dental stains due to highly pigmented food and drinks.
