How can you keep your dentures adhered to your gums?
Dentures are attached to your gums through the natural suctioning power of your gums. However, it’s possible for your dentures to be removed when you eat, laugh or talk if the suction is removed. When you’re dentures are first made, they should fit the contours of your mouth perfectly and you won’t need to make use of a fixative. However, a fixative may be required when your mouth starts to change due to the shrinkage of your gums in order to keep your dentures attached to your gums. How should you take care of your dentures?
Basically, your dentures are very fragile and dropping them could lead to them breaking so be very careful when handling your dentures.
And just like anything else you place inside your mouth, you should disinfect your dentures before you place your dentures back inside your mouth. When disinfecting, the idea is to brush your dentures and then soaking the dentures in a solution of denture cleaner or a water, and then brushing again before placing them on.
While you can remove stains from food and drinks through brushing, if you see stains which are stubborn and cannot be removed, then make sure to bring your dentures to the dentist in order to have them looked at and professionally cleaned.
How long will my dentures last?
For as long as you take care of your dentures properly, then they should be able to last for quite a long time. However, that does not mean that your dentures do not need to be readjusted or relined anymore. Especially when you have lost majority or all of your teeth, your gums will undergo extreme changes due to the shrinkage of these tissues. When your gums shrink, your dentures won’t fit like they used to causing them to fall off.
Regular check-ups are then important because it is during these instances wherein your dentist will be able to evaluate if your dentures still fit the way that they ought to and suggest adjusting or relining according to the need.
