Dos and Don’ts of Veneers
Getting dental veneers is easy, but it’s keeping them aesthetically intact and making them last for a longer period of time which is difficult. When it comes to dental veneers, what are the dos and don’ts?
Do maintain a healthy dental regimen.
If neglecting your dental health was what caused you to need veneers, then it’s crucial that you do not make the same mistake again. Following a healthy dental regimen will stave off any onset of gum diseases which could cause your gums to recede. The thing about veneers is that the edge ends right under the gum line. With gum recession, the edge of the veneer will end up just below the gum line which is very unsightly.
Don’t eat things which are very hard.
When you bite into an apple or idly bite a pen, what you’re doing is exposing your veneers to a lot of force, which could lead to your veneers cracking or chipping. If you cannot avoid eating apples or carrots, then at least take the time to dice them up so that you can chew them using your molars and not endanger your veneers.
Do wear mouthguards.
Mouthguards protect your veneers from the possibility of being damaged because of head accidents as caused by sports. While your veneers may not be susceptible to the development of cavities, they can definitely break, chip and crack. So the next time that you play any contact sport, make sure to don mouthguards.
Don’t eat or drink anything which can stain your teeth.
Or at least minimize your exposure to these substances. It’s true that your veneers are no longer vulnerable to staining, but they are attached to the front of your teeth with a kind of cement that can take up stain. Since this cement borders your veneers, you’ll end up with an outlined veneer.
Do get diagnosed for bruxism.
Bruxism is a dental condition wherein a person excessively grinds or gnashes his or her teeth. This grinding could lead to the creation of microscopic breaks and cracks on the surface of your teeth and your veneers. Because episodes of bruxism often occur while a person is asleep, mouthguards can help to protect your teeth and veneers from the disadvantages of excessive teeth grinding. You can also ask your dentist if you need your bite adjusted in order to have long-term cure and relief from teeth grinding.
